Our story

What does the name Myrtle & Magnolia mean?

I get this question a lot! Whether it’s from engaged couples or shoppers, people can tell it has a connection to the South, but always want to know where it came from.

Hi, I am Krissy Schuck, Owner and Lead Designer of Myrtle & Magnolia! I am originally from Ambler, PA, but now reside in South Philly.

My childhood and teen years were very traumatic as I grew up bouncing back and forth between my divorced parents’ houses, never having a stable, loving home to feel safe in. My life was chaotic, so when I had the chance to escape, I ran away…to college! I moved to South Carolina fresh out of high school to attend Coastal Carolina University's Theatre Program. My college experience as a Theatre Major reshaped my entire life, gave me the tools to succeed, and sent me back into the world with confidence, skills, and a wealth of knowledge pertaining to events and production.

I moved back to Philadelphia in 2006, and went straight into a career in Philly’s vibrant Theatre scene. I married young and welcomed two sons by 2017. Abruptly in late 2017, with two babies under 2, I was pushed to exit my role in the Theatre and become a Stay at Home Mom. Being a SAHM will always be the hardest job I have ever held. I went on multiple interviews, but no one would hire a woman with babies- I was even told this directly in one interview. I needed to do something creative, and if I couldn’t find that out in the world- I would have to build it myself.

At one point, I wasn’t sure how much longer I could take being a SAHM, so I went to visit my best friend, Suzie, in South Carolina with my younger son to rejuvinate my mind and find some career and life clarity. While sitting on the beach one afternoon, Suzie took my son to the ocean and told me to take a minute to myself to think. I had always loved Flower Shops, and hoped that one day I would be able to learn how to design. Until then, I had no chance to learn floral design. I looked out at the water and I realized I had nothing left to lose. I decided to return home and begin Floral Design training and open my own business. I started taking floral design classes at night, and would practice my skills during the day when I was home with my sons. I started my business out of my dining room with a simple Instagram page, and within 6 months had moved into a studio with a roster of clients and events already booked.

To name my business, I went back to the roots I created for myself as inspiration on what to name my company. Myrtle & Magnolia is in honor of South Carolina and the way it changed my life. Myrtle for the life I created in South Carolina, and Magnolia for the life I created when I moved back to Philadelphia.

I am so glad you are here and interested in working with my team! I have spent the past decade building this  company from scratch, and developing it into Fishtown’s Premier Custom Floral Boutique. I am a Certified Floral Designer through the American Institute of Floral Design since 2019, and I employ a variety of highly trained floral designers and theatre professionals to help create gorgeous designs and expertly execute events of all sizes.
